Looking deeply into my self via psychoanalysis, i have carefully discovered that at a very young age, i was already beginning to grapple and grab at Lacan's ideas about the structure of language. This is particularly true with the part about transcendental signifiers, signifiers we assume to be the starting point at which we participate in the symbolic order. For myself, this special signifiers has underwent several and if not many shifts. I remember at an early age being a emo, depressive and existentialist teenager who could find no peace trying to understand the world, particularly dealing with issues of life and death and meaning as a whole. Briefly, through the ultimate signifier of religion, i found peace, an oblivious sort of peace, where momentarily, i understood everything and knew nothing. Unfortunately over the years, i found this signifier wanting and once again it shifts, into the transcendental signifier of friendship, where i found peace in holding and treasuring these bonds over myself. Worked well for a while, until i burnt out, then i found love as my new transcendental signifier, one signifier which surfaces time and time again with a new signified. Fortunately for me today, i realise that it is not possible for one to hold on tight to one transcendental signifier, thus my submission to language and that the resignation that everything around us is but a chain of signifier. I have learnt to value the whole chain rather than be focused on one mere signifiers, thus my happiness and meaning in life is more or less encompassed by the following chain.
Signifier-Love Signified-Amm Signifier-Family Signified- Family ==linked by the fact all of you validate my existence= Signifier- Friendship Signified-My buddies ==chained by the fact the acquisition of money is closely linked to education and money means being able to buy and create happier circumstances for the earlier signified=== Signifier Education Signified NUS == Signifier-Money Signified Careers
This could go on, but i guess you guys would get the picture. Life is a chain of signifiers constantly shifting over the signified, with no final centre of meaning. But that's depressing, so what is your chain today?
I love you sweetie. Muackz.
